Saugeen River Fish Baffle

Posted on February 17, 2016

A deteriorated concrete box culvert conveying a tributary of the Saugeen River under Highway 21 had reached the end of its lifespan and was in need of replacement.  Concern – the tributary’s support of a diverse range of coldwater fish species.

Under the auspices of the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), a small group of concerned industry colleagues has been collaborating on a project to design and test an innovative CSP ‘fish ladder’ that will enhance the safe passage of migrating fish over vertical barriers. The analytical stage of the project is complete, and the first prototype is built and installed using the Saugeen River culvert as the test ground.
