About CSPI

Who We Are

The Corrugated Steel Pipe Institute, or CSPI, is a federally chartered industrial trade association of corrugated steel pipe (CSP) and structural plate corrugated steel pipe (SPCSP) fabricators, steel producers, and suppliers to the CSP industry.

For the thousands of engineers and others who build and maintain the over one million kilometers of roadway across Canada, CSP products are the accepted standard for culvert drainage use. In fact, the term "culvert" is synonymous with "CSP".

Other and newer applications for CSP have in recent years led the CSP industry to adopt the "CSP" terminology rather than the traditional "metal culvert" terminology. Storm Water Management, for example, is a growing market for CSP fabricators. Municipalities are increasingly requiring that all new sewerage construction separate the sanitary sewage and manage storm runoff. CSP products provide considerable advantages and economy when chosen for storm sewer installations.

The use of CSP and SPCSP products for underpasses, stream enclosures, small bridges, underground shelters, tunnels and numerous other applications has considerably broadened the scope and market for CSPI members. New applications require new technology. The CSP industry has, through its Institute, developed product standards and recommended design and installation practices to ensure proper selection and economical design in CSP.

What We Do

The aims and objectives of the Institute are:

  • To promote and encourage the general and wider use of CSP for drainage and other use, in public and private constructions, across Canada.
  • To develop and provide the CSP industry and the public with product information, recommended standards and specifications, and recommended practices in the design, selection, application and installation of CSP.
  • To initiate and support research, marketing, promotion, public relations and advertising programs designed to broaden the markets for CSP products, by creating an awareness, appreciation and understanding of its qualities and abilities.
  • To co-operate with public and private agencies engaged in the formulation of specifications and designs for drainage and other underground structures.
  • To provide, in a professional manner, the industry and the public with documented experience and up-to-date technical information on CSP products, and their proper use and application.
  • To enhance, through responsible public relations practices, the reputation and image of the Canadian CSP industry.
  • To co-operate with allied industry and government authorities and associations to further the above objectives.
  • To encourage and participate in educational endeavours in colleges and universities.

Organization

The Institute provides an opportunity for all member companies to have a voice in its activities. A Board of Directors, elected by membership representatives at an Annual Meeting, formulates policy, decides on activities and gives direction to staff. A technical library of papers and reports on general drainage practice, flexible underground strength design, service life, hydrology, hydraulics and other selected topics is maintained as a resource for research and reference.

Publications

Text books are available at a nominal charge on drainage product and sewer design. A computer program is also available for the design of underground stormwater detention systems using CSP. In addition, the Institute has numerous Case Study Bulletins and Technical Data Sheets available at no charge.
